🇷🇺 Russia - 🇺🇦 Ukraine • Pokrovsk under pressure, Moscow advances eastward

Russian forces are concentrating their strikes and troops on the city of Pokrovsk, a strategic railway junction in the Donetsk region. After more than a year of fighting, this urban area, once home to 60,000 people, is now largely in ruins, with fewer than 1,300 civilians remaining. The city has become one of the main hotspots of fighting on the front line, with nearly half of Russian glide bomb attacks targeting this area, according to Ukrainian authorities.

Despite resistance from Ukrainian units that continue to defend certain neighborhoods, Russian troops have managed to advance, anchoring themselves in the southwest and gaining ground on other axes. Pokrovsk now appears to be the largest urban center in danger of being captured by Russia since the fall of Bakhmut in May 2023. If taken, the road would be open to Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, the last major cities held by Ukraine in the Donbas, a region that Vladimir Putin has been targeting for years.

The battle has come at a high human cost for both sides. While Russia is sacrificing many soldiers to advance, Ukraine is facing a severe shortage of troops and has to move its units in response to enemy breakthroughs, exposing the front line to new risks of breaches, according to some officials.

The civilian population continues to dwindle, with evacuations remaining difficult amid the fighting. The situation also remains tense in towns near Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, which are now within range of Russian drones. With winter approaching, the fighting is likely to intensify, imposing further hardships on the civilian population. The New York Times

🇮🇱 Israel • Settlement activity in the West Bank has reached an unprecedented pace, driven by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich in the run-up to the Israeli elections. 50,000 new homes have been approved for 2025, compared to 12,000 in 2020. The mass registration of state-owned land and the legalization of existing settlements are aimed at strengthening Israeli control and making the creation of a Palestinian state illusory, despite the stated opposition of Washington and the international community.

According to Lebanese authorities, the Israeli strikes have caused civilian casualties.

🇸🇩 Sudan • The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have accepted a proposal for a humanitarian truce put forward by mediators from the Quad (United States, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt) in an attempt to address the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of the war and protect civilians. 🇲🇽 Mexico • President Claudia Sheinbaum, who was sexually assaulted on a street in Mexico City, has filed a complaint against her attacker, who was arrested after also assaulting other women. According to the UN, 70% of Mexican women have experienced some form of violence, and 10 women are killed every day in the country. The Minister for Women has denounced the trivialization of these acts.

🇩🇪 Germany • The far-right AfD party is suspected of passing sensitive information to Russia. Party members are asking very detailed questions in the Bundestag about the capabilities and weaknesses of the Bundeswehr, which is worrying the Ministry of Defense. Several politicians believe that these actions appear to be coordinated and target data that is useful to foreign powers. The AfD strongly rejects the allegations, saying it is only seeking to highlight the state of national infrastructure and its weaknesses.

🇫🇷 France • General Fabien Mandon, Chief of Staff of the French Army, reaffirmed during a parliamentary hearing the urgency of rapid rearmament to prepare the army for a possible Russian attack within three to four years. He called for more intensive training for soldiers, increased funding for ammunition and drones, and emphasized the modernization of air capabilities, while expressing reservations about the new nuclear aircraft carrier currently being designed. He also supported the design of the next-generation SCAF fighter jet, in collaboration with Germany and Spain.

🇨🇬 Congo-Brazzaville • After a 20-year absence, Congo-Brazzaville has returned to the international financial markets by issuing a $670 million bond through the London Stock Exchange to refinance part of its debt. The authorities emphasized their commitment to fiscal stability and transparency, promising to publish regular statistics on public debt.

🇺🇸 United States - 🇪🇺 European Union • The U.S. Supreme Court expressed serious doubts about the legality of the tariffs imposed by Donald Trump on the rest of the world during a hearing on Wednesday. Both conservative and progressive judges questioned the president's use of emergency powers to justify these measures. If the tariffs are overturned, Brussels remains wary: Trump could seek other legal grounds to replace them. The trade agreement reached in Turnberry between Trump and Von der Leyen, which capped tariffs on European exports at 15%, could also be renegotiated.
