🇬🇼 Guinea-Bissau • Military coup and seizure of power

While the country awaited the results of the presidential and legislative elections held this weekend, the military announced that it had taken full control of Guinea-Bissau. The vote counting process has been suspended, and land, air, and sea borders have been closed. Outgoing President Umaro Sissoco Embalo confirmed his removal from office by telephone and said he was “at headquarters,” detained but “well treated,” according to an army officer.

General Denis N'Canha, speaking on behalf of a high command for the restoration of order, justified the takeover by citing the need to guarantee national security. He also mentioned that intelligence services had uncovered a plan to destabilize the country, involving national figures involved in drug trafficking and the introduction of weapons intended to disrupt the constitutional order.

The post-election climate was particularly tense: both Embalo and his main opponent, Fernando Dias da Costa, had declared themselves winners in the first round, even though the official results were not due until tomorrow. Several major political figures, including Fernando Dias da Costa and Domingos Simoes Pereira, were arrested and taken to the Bissau air base, according to local sources.

In the capital, the day was marked by reduced traffic and apparent calm, contrasting with the crowd movements and gunfire near the presidential palace earlier in the day. A mandatory curfew has now been imposed by the military, who say they will remain in charge of the country until further notice. The country has already experienced several coups and numerous coup attempts since its independence. France 24

IN SHORT
🇮🇱 Israel - 🇵🇸 Palestine • Israel has announced a new operation in the north of the occupied West Bank, deploying its forces overnight against Palestinian groups. The army says this is not an extension of the operation launched in January, but a separate intervention. Since October 2023, a thousand Palestinians have died in the West Bank, and at least 43 people have died on the Israeli side.

🇺🇸 United States - 🇷🇺 Russia • Several US lawmakers have called for the dismissal of Steve Witkoff, Trump's special envoy. In a call, the recording of which was obtained by Bloomberg, he directly advises Moscow on how to present its peace plan to Trump, suggesting the cession of Donetsk and other Ukrainian territories to Russia. Republican and Democratic representatives believe that he can no longer be trusted and that this constitutes treason, while Trump defends Witkoff, claiming that he is simply playing his role as a negotiator.

🇫🇷 France - 🇷🇺 Russia • French counterintelligence authorities have arrested four people, including Russian and Franco-Russian nationals, suspected of spying for Moscow. The SOS Donbass group, founded by Franco-Russian Anna N., is accused of gathering sensitive information, particularly from French companies. Some of those detained are being prosecuted for criminal conspiracy, contact with a foreign power, and gathering information for that power, offenses punishable by 10 years in prison. France has reported an intensification of Russian attempts at destabilization, mainly through disinformation campaigns and clandestine actions.

🇮🇷 Iran • Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told France 24 that he was ready to negotiate on nuclear issues with the United States, while stressing the lack of real willingness on the American side. He said that an agreement to exchange French prisoners Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris (who have been released but are still stuck at the French embassy in Tehran) for Mahdieh Esfandiari should be concluded within two months, depending on the judicial process in France. On the conflict with Israel, he said that Iran considers itself the winner of the June war and has full confidence in Saudi Arabia as an intermediary.

🇹🇼 Taiwan • President Lai Ching-te has proposed increasing the defense budget by $40 billion between 2026 and 2033, in particular to purchase American weapons and strengthen capabilities against China. This budget would bring military spending to 3.3% of GDP, a level not seen since 2009. The aim is to develop advanced technologies, such as an air defense system inspired by the Israeli dome, and to increase the cost of a possible Chinese attack.

🇺🇳 UN • The selection process for the future UN Secretary-General, who will replace Antonio Guterres in January 2027, has just been officially launched. Member states are invited to propose candidates who meet strict criteria of competence and integrity. Although several countries openly support the idea of appointing a woman to the post, no consensus has emerged so far. Among the names already mentioned are Michelle Bachelet, Rafael Grossi, and Rebeca Grynspan.

🇧🇷 Brazil • Former President Jair Bolsonaro has begun serving his 27-year prison sentence for attempted coup, after exhausting all appeals before the Supreme Court. The 70-year-old remains in custody at the federal police headquarters in Brasilia, under privileged conditions.

🇬🇷 Greece - 🇺🇸 United States • Greece is becoming a new gateway for American liquefied natural gas in Europe, with two operational terminals supplying its neighbors, including Ukraine, starting this winter. An agreement signed with the United States provides for the annual delivery of 700 million cubic meters of gas over 20 years starting in 2030. Giants ExxonMobil and Chevron are partnering with Greek companies to drill in Crete and the Ionian Sea. Demand for gas in Greece could decline as renewables boom, and the price of US LNG remains very high.

🇱🇧 Lebanon - 🇨🇾 Cyprus • The two countries have just concluded an agreement on their maritime border after almost 20 years of deadlock, facilitating the exploration of oil and gas resources in the Mediterranean. The agreement was signed in Beirut by Presidents Joseph Aoun and Nikos Christodoulides. Cyprus hopes to supply Europe with gas from 2027 onwards, as part of its efforts to diversify its energy sources away from Russia. Lebanon hopes that this will help alleviate its severe economic crisis by attracting partners to develop its offshore resources.
