🇵🇱 Poland • Wind turbines as defense mechanisms
The Baltic Sea has become an area of tension, particularly since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Drones, cable sabotage, and underwater incidents have been on the rise since the Nord Stream explosions. To protect itself, Poland has come up with an original idea: transforming its offshore wind farms into surveillance tools.
The Baltic Power project, developed by the public group Orlen and the Canadian company Northland Power, is the first example of this. Scheduled for completion in 2026, it will have 76 wind turbines capable of powering 1.5 million homes. Each mast will be equipped with radars and sensors capable of detecting the movements of drones, suspicious vessels, or maritime incursions more than 20 km from the Polish coast.
Warsaw is keeping the technologies used secret, but the military authorities are directly involved in the project. The goal is to create a new layer of surveillance to complement land-based radars. Unlike Sweden, which has suspended several wind farm projects to avoid interference with its defenses, Poland has integrated these military functions into the design from the outset, circumventing the risk of interference. The wind turbines thus become sentinels.
This combination of energy transition and national security is exciting NATO. The alliance had already dreamed of using oil platforms as observation posts. Wind turbines, already equipped with weather sensors, offer a less expensive and more environmentally friendly alternative. According to the Foundation for Strategic Research, this model could inspire other European countries, provided that sensitive issues are resolved: who controls the data? Who maintains the equipment? Who finances it?
In the context of Russia's hybrid warfare, Warsaw intends to take advantage of its decarbonization needs to strengthen its defensive posture. Located less than 200 km from Kaliningrad, the Baltic Power park supports Poland's strategy of reducing “gray areas” in the Baltic Sea, where Europe remains vulnerable. L’Express

IN SHORT
🇮🇱 Israel - 🇵🇸 Palestine • At least 104 people, including 46 children, were killed in Gaza during Israeli strikes. The Israeli army, accusing Hamas of violating the ceasefire, carried out these bombings yesterday and today. Overwhelmed hospitals received numerous bodies, mostly women and children. Hamas denies responsibility and denounces a breach of the agreement. These strikes were strongly condemned by the UN Secretary-General. Benjamin Netanyahu, who was due to appear before a judge yesterday, had his hearing cut short for “security reasons.”
🇲🇱 Mali • A convoy transporting fuel was attacked near Bamako by JNIM (Islamist terrorism) yesterday, according to local authorities, with several tankers being seized by the attackers. In response to this escalation of violence, the US embassy has asked its citizens to leave Mali immediately by plane, citing an increasingly unpredictable situation and advising against any travel by road. The fall of Bamako seems increasingly likely.
🇸🇩 Sudan • Hundreds of people (at least 450), including hospital patients, were killed in El-Fasher after the city was taken by FSR paramilitary forces, according to testimonies from displaced persons and humanitarian agencies. Violence, including detentions, shootings, and sexual violence, has affected civilians. Approximately 35,000 residents have fled since Sunday, and international organizations have reported executions and multiple attacks on medical and humanitarian facilities.
🇷🇺 Russia • Vladimir Putin has announced that Russia has just tested the Poseidon nuclear underwater drone, designed to navigate at great depths and high speeds, capable of carrying atomic payloads and considered undetectable. According to Moscow, this system is unparalleled anywhere in the world and is intended to equip the Belgorod submarine.
🇺🇦 Ukraine - 🇫🇷 France • Kiev has entered into negotiations with France for the purchase of Rafale fighter jets, in addition to discussions with Sweden (Gripen) and the United States (F-16). Paris has confirmed the delivery of Mirage 2000s, while the Rafale remains at the negotiation stage. On the Swedish side, an agreement in principle covers 100 to 150 Gripen aircraft, accompanied by potential local production. Ukraine is aiming for a tactical fleet of 250 modern aircraft (Swedish, French, and American) to gradually replace its MiG-29s and Su-27s.
🇺🇦 Ukraine • The strategic city of Pokrovsk, key to the Donbass, is under intense Russian attack. Moscow has infiltrated small groups of soldiers and is deploying explosive drones against Ukrainian logistics. Despite attempts to encircle it, Pokrovsk is still resisting, but is likely to fall to the Russians given the difficult situation of the Ukrainian troops. The fall of the city would give Russia crucial access to the west and facilitate the capture of the rest of the region.
🇵🇰 Pakistan - 🇦🇫 Afghanistan • Islamabad has announced the failure of negotiations for a lasting truce with Afghanistan after four days of talks in Istanbul mediated by Qatar and Turkey. The talks, launched following deadly clashes and a Taliban border offensive, failed to produce any progress. The border remains closed, tensions persist, and Pakistan promises to continue the fight against groups it considers terrorists. Kabul has not responded publicly.
🇫🇷 France - 🇷🇺 Russia • The trial of three Bulgarians began today in Paris for the desecration of the Holocaust memorial, an act suspected of being coordinated by Russia in order to sow tensions between communities in France. Over the past two years, symbolic attacks such as pig heads left in front of mosques and anti-Semitic graffiti have aimed to stir up internal divisions and weaken French support for Ukraine, against a backdrop of disinformation campaigns and psychological manipulation orchestrated by Moscow.
🇺🇸 United States - 🇨🇳 China • The US government has for decades facilitated the sale of Chinese surveillance technology by Silicon Valley companies, according to an investigation by the Associated Press. Despite official restrictions, American tech giants have equipped China's repressive apparatus through persistent loopholes such as cloud services, circumventing export bans on advanced AI chips.
🇺🇸 United States - 🇰🇷 South Korea • Donald Trump formalized a trade agreement with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung in Gyeongju, reducing auto tariffs to 15% and providing for $350 billion in Korean investment in the United States. This announcement precedes a planned meeting with Xi Jinping, as a truce in the trade war is hoped for. North Korea, for its part, conducted a new cruise missile test at sea.
🇧🇷 Brazil • A large-scale police raid against the Comando Vermelho gang in the favelas of Rio resulted in the deaths of at least 130 people, including 115 accused criminals and four police officers. The operation, the deadliest to date, mobilized 2,500 officers and led to the seizure of 93 rifles and more than half a ton of drugs. NGOs and the UN have expressed concern about the brutality and scale of this unprecedented intervention.
