🇹🇭 Thailand - 🇰🇭 Cambodia • A turning point in border clashes

Fighting has resumed along the Thai-Cambodian border, with heavy weapons being used, calling into question the 26 October ceasefire and prompting mass evacuations of civilians on both sides.

Thai air strikes have targeted Cambodian positions, with Phnom Penh responding with rocket fire, killing at least seven civilians on the Cambodian side and three Thai soldiers since Sunday. The Thai authorities claim to have destroyed a casino near the Chong Anma pass, described as a cyber fraud site but occupied by the Cambodian army.

The truce has been fragile since November, when Bangkok unilaterally suspended the agreement following incidents involving PMN-2 anti-personnel mines attributed to Cambodia, the recent use of which was confirmed by an ASEAN observer mission. On this basis, Thailand sought a response from the United Nations on the sidelines of the meeting of the States Parties to the Ottawa Convention, to which both countries are signatories. The two capitals are blaming each other for the first attacks in this new sequence, against a backdrop of persistent disagreement over the border inherited from the colonial period.

On the ground, friction points are multiplying, from the provinces of Sisaket and Ubon Ratchathani to the disputed areas housing Khmer temples, including Ta Krabei, which the Thai army had promised to retake after the July clashes. Phnom Penh denounces an offensive against a dozen sites, while Bangkok cites the protection of routes targeted by Cambodian fire. The violence in July, marked by BM-21 rockets attributed to Cambodia and significant civilian casualties in Thailand, is fuelling a tense public climate.

Internal political calculations are further hardening positions. With Thai elections approaching in early 2026, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and the military leadership are stepping up their tough rhetoric, promising to neutralise Cambodia's military capabilities, a line also supported by the progressive opposition on border issues and the fight against cybercrime. In Phnom Penh, Hun Manet and the influential Hun Sen are playing the nationalist card, condemning an "aggression" and defending a response. A rapid de-escalation is unlikely. Le Monde

IN SHORT
🇵🇸 Palestine • More than 9,000 children were hospitalised for acute malnutrition in Gaza in October, according to the UN, despite the 10 October “ceasefire”. Israeli restrictions on aid continue to limit the entry of convoys, which are well below the planned 600 lorries per day. UNICEF warns of infants weighing less than one kilogram and an increase in cases among pregnant women, signs of a lasting nutritional crisis.

🇳🇬 Nigeria • Around 100 schoolchildren kidnapped at the end of November from the Catholic boarding school in Papiri have been released and handed over to the local authorities in Minna. According to the Christian Association of Nigeria, they are being reunited with their families despite the lack of comprehensive medical assessments. According to CAN estimates, around 165 children are still being held captive, while President Tinubu says 115 people remain in detention.

🇺🇦 Ukraine • Kiev claims to have destroyed a Russian Buk-M3 air defence system in the occupied region of Zaporizhia, thanks to a drone operation by the Primas special unit. The system, valued at $100 million, is among Moscow's most advanced defensive equipment. According to Ukrainian intelligence, this strike is part of a broader campaign that has already neutralised several Buk and Tor systems as well as targets in Crimea.

🇺🇸 United States - 🇪🇺 Europe • Donald Trump has stepped up his criticism of European allies, calling their leaders weak and accusing Europe of failing to control migration or take effective action on the war in Ukraine. He spoke of a growing ideological divide and threatened to influence European political dynamics through public statements.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom • British MPs surprised observers by supporting a proposal for a new customs union with the EU. The motion, tabled by Liberal Democrat Al Pinkerton, resulted in a tied vote (100-100), leading House of Commons Deputy Speaker Caroline Noakes to break the deadlock and allow the debate to continue. However, the government and the Labour majority remain opposed to a return to the customs union.

🇰🇷 South Korea • Seoul dispatched fighter jets after detecting seven Russian and two Chinese aircraft in its air defence identification zone. According to the South Korean military, the aircraft entered and exited the ADIZ several times before leaving after an hour, without violating airspace. Beijing refers to a joint exercise with Moscow as part of their 10th strategic air patrol.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom - 🇵🇸 Palestine • Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair has been excluded from the future ‘board of peace’ for Gaza, with several Arab states rejecting his involvement because of his role in the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Although supported by Washington and Tel Aviv, his name arouses strong regional mistrust. However, he could still be involved in the process in a less central role as discussions continue on the reconstruction and governance of the enclave.

🇨🇿 Czech Republic • Andrej Babis has been appointed Prime Minister by President Petr Pavel, marking his return to power two months after his ANO party won the general election. The billionaire, who promises to increase social benefits and reduce support for Ukraine, is forming a coalition that includes the far right. His more Eurosceptic stance is drawing attention from Brussels, while his legal troubles remain unresolved.

🇪🇺 Europe • European defence stocks are on the rise again as Berlin prepares to approve €52 billion in military orders. According to Morgan Stanley, this momentum could intensify in early 2026, driven by a favourable seasonal effect. Rheinmetall, already up sharply this year, is identified as the main beneficiary.

🇧🇯 Benin - 🇫🇷 France • France provided intelligence, observation and logistical support to Beninese forces to counter the violent coup attempt in Cotonou. At the request of the Talon government and in coordination with ECOWAS, Paris also facilitated regional exchanges. A French aircraft specialising in intelligence was spotted over the capital this weekend, while Nigerian troops intervened in support of loyalist forces.
