🇨🇳 China - 🇹🇼 Taiwan • Beijing increases pressure on Taiwan in a prolonged normalization strategy

In recent weeks, China has stepped up its statements, articles, and symbolic initiatives, signaling a hardening of its policy toward Taiwan. Although the Chinese military is not considered capable of a full-scale invasion at this stage, officials in Beijing have adopted a much more incisive tone regarding “reunification” with the island. This shift has been reflected in official publications detailing the future governance of Taiwan under Chinese control, envisaging a “one country, two systems” model similar to that of Hong Kong and Macao, which Taipei has long rejected due to the erosion of autonomy in Hong Kong.

This communication aims to minimize Taiwan's international status and present its annexation as a guarantee of peace and prosperity, while warning that any risk of conflict would be eliminated by the elimination of the Taiwanese independence movement and external interference. Beijing has also established a new national holiday, reclassifying Taiwan's “Retrocession Day,” commemorated on October 25, as the moment the island returned to China under the communist era.

The Chinese government is now more inflexible towards other states' positions on the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. For example, after the German foreign minister took a stand in favor of non-violence, Beijing accused Germany of supporting Taiwanese separatism, illustrating what several analysts describe as unprecedented diplomatic rhetoric.

The Chinese authorities are also increasing the technological visibility of their control with the publication in late October of satellite photos of iconic sites in Taiwan by the Chinese media, images presented as proof that the island is under constant surveillance by Beijing. In Taipei, these photos have been denounced as political voyeurism, with representatives believing that Beijing is seeking to demonstrate its visual control over the territory.

Analysts and experts describe this strengthening of Chinese initiatives and rhetoric as a gradual adjustment over two to three years, with the aim of erasing the limits observed so far in the management and communication around Taiwan. This strategy could also pave the way for future international negotiations, particularly with the United States, in the coming months. The Guardian

IN SHORT

🇺🇸 United States - 🇻🇪 Venezuela - 🇨🇴 Colombia • The US aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford, which arrived off the coast of Latin America on November 11, has reinforced the US military presence in the region, heightening tensions with Venezuela, which denounces it as an imperialist threat. Washington justifies this deployment as part of the fight against drug trafficking. Caracas has responded with military maneuvers, and Colombia has suspended its information exchange with the United States following US strikes that left 76 people dead. Concerns have also been expressed in Brazil and the United Kingdom.

🇮🇱 Israel • Ron Dermer, Minister of Strategic Affairs and close ally of Benjamin Netanyahu, announced his resignation after leading negotiations for the release of most of the Israeli hostages held by Hamas since the attack on October 7, 2023. Having been the target of public criticism, he justified his departure by citing a promise made to his family. A former ambassador to Washington and a key figure in Israeli-US cooperation, Dermer was appointed minister without having been elected, a rare situation in Israeli politics.

🇪🇺 European Union • The European Commission has presented new measures to counter the “war of influence” attributed to Russia, which is accused of spreading misleading information and falsifying historical facts. In its roadmap, Brussels plans to provide increased support to the media and combat media deserts in Europe. A center will be launched to coordinate the fight against foreign interference, with a focus on cyberattacks and risks related to artificial intelligence. Violence against journalists and politicians has also been taken into account, particularly after the recent European elections.

🇵🇱 Poland • President Karol Nawrocki marched alongside ultra-nationalist groups during the November 11 national holiday in Warsaw, illustrating his closeness to the hard right six months after his election. His participation was welcomed by many supporters, while the march, dominated by extremist symbols and anti-immigration slogans, attracts more young people every year. Polls predict a victory for the far-right coalition in the upcoming legislative elections.

🇮🇱 Israel • Israeli security forces announced the arrest of several settlers after violence near Tulkarem in the occupied West Bank, where masked civilians attacked Palestinians and set fire to property. Four Palestinians were injured, while vehicles and facilities were destroyed in the villages of Beit Lid and Deir Sharaf. October 2025 was the most violent month since 2006, with 264 incidents recorded according to the UN.

🇺🇦 Ukraine • Timur Mindich, co-owner of the audiovisual company founded by Volodymyr Zelensky, has been accused of overseeing the accumulation and legalization of criminal funds in the energy sector, estimated at $100 million. The case also involves the Minister of Justice, who is suspected of having benefited from these financial flows. Seven people have been charged and the Energoatom board has been dismissed. Minditch reportedly left the country before the searches took place. Zelensky has not yet responded publicly to these accusations.

🇺🇦 Ukraine • Ukrainian Justice Minister Herman Halushchenko has been suspended from his duties following a corruption investigation we talked about above. Accused of receiving personal benefits, he has been replaced by the Deputy Minister for European Integration, Liudmyla Suhak.

🇩🇿 Algeria - 🇩🇪 Germany • Algeria has agreed to pardon Franco-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal, who has been imprisoned since November 2024 and was sentenced on appeal to five years' imprisonment for comments he made about the country's historical borders. The decision follows a request from the German president, who called for a humanitarian gesture and proposed a transfer to Germany so that Sansal could receive medical care appropriate to his age and fragile health.

🇵🇸 Palestine - 🇮🇱 Israel - 🇺🇸 United States • Nearly 200 Hamas fighters are trapped in tunnels in Rafah, which has been under Israeli control since the ceasefire in Gaza. The movement refuses to surrender, Israel rules out any compromise, and Washington is concerned about a deadlock in Trump's plan for Gaza. Negotiations are emerging around the return of an Israeli soldier's body and the possible evacuation of the fighters, but no country has agreed to take them in to date. The situation remains tense, with political and international pressure on Benjamin Netanyahu.
