🇨🇳 China – 🇹🇼 Taiwan • Beijing launches large-scale live-fire military exercises around the island

Tensions between China and Taiwan have reached a new threshold. Beijing has announced the launch of large-scale military exercises around the island, involving land, naval, air and missile forces. These manoeuvres, dubbed "Mission Justice 2025", include live-fire drills on maritime targets located north and southwest of Taiwan. According to the Chinese military, destroyers, frigates, fighter jets, bombers and drones are being mobilised, with the stated aim of testing multidimensional blockade and deterrence capabilities.

The Taiwanese authorities reacted quickly. The Ministry of Defence reported detecting 89 Chinese military aircraft and 28 warships and coastguard vessels near its territory, a level not seen since October 2024. Taipei also reported the presence of a formation of Chinese amphibious assault ships manoeuvring in the Western Pacific. In response, a command centre was activated and appropriate forces were deployed as part of a rapid response exercise.

Beijing fully acknowledges the coercive nature of these manoeuvres. The Eastern Theatre Command of the People's Liberation Army says it wants to strengthen air-sea combat readiness patrols, seize overall superiority, blockade key ports and areas, and increase military pressure on the island. Maps published by the Chinese army show five areas around Taiwan where live firing is planned, accompanied by a warning to civilian ships and aircraft.

The Taiwanese authorities have denounced this as military intimidation and a violation of international law. The island's presidency strongly condemns the use of force to threaten neighbouring countries, while Taipei points out that some of the Chinese exercise zones are less than twelve nautical miles from its coastline. The civil aviation administration has also warned that the creation of a temporary danger zone, decreed for a period of ten hours, will severely disrupt regional air traffic, affecting more than 100,000 passengers and 857 flights.

On the diplomatic front, Beijing is warning "external forces" accused of arming Taiwan and using the island to contain China. The Chinese Foreign Ministry believes that such support only encourages independence supporters and brings the Taiwan Strait closer to a situation of imminent war. Reunification is presented as a non-negotiable objective, with any attempt to hinder it doomed to failure.

This show of force comes amid an already deteriorating regional context. It follows several weeks of tensions between China and Japan, as well as a new US arms sale to Taiwan, the largest since 2001. Beijing has responded to this decision with sanctions targeting US defence companies. For Taipei, these exercises confirm growing military pressure, while for Beijing, they constitute a direct warning to the Taiwanese authorities and their international supporters. Le Monde

IN SHORT
🇰🇵 North Korea • North Korean authorities conducted two test launches of long-range cruise missiles over the Yellow Sea, under the supervision of Kim Jong-un. According to state media, the missiles flew for more than two hours and were intended to assess the response posture of missile units. Pyongyang says it wants to develop its nuclear forces without limitation. Seoul says the launches took place from the Sunan area near Pyongyang and refers to them as a response to US and South Korean manoeuvres.

🇺🇦 Ukraine • Volodymyr Zelensky believes that the deployment of foreign troops in Ukraine is necessary to guarantee real security against Russia. The Ukrainian president believes that this presence would reinforce the commitments already made by Western partners. The United States is offering security guarantees for 15 years, extendable, a period considered insufficient by Kiev. Donald Trump has confirmed progress towards a peace plan and mentioned an address to the Ukrainian Parliament. Paris has announced a meeting of allies in early January on security guarantees.

🇺🇸 United States – 🇻🇪 Venezuela • Donald Trump claims that the United States has struck a "major facility" linked to drug trafficking, referring to an operation carried out last week without specifying the location or details. US officials confirm the destruction of a site described as a drug trafficking infrastructure, without giving operational details. The military authorities and the CIA declined to comment. If the information is confirmed, this would be the first ground strike since the launch of the US campaign against Venezuela, which has so far focused on naval strikes against ships suspected of transporting cocaine.

🇸🇾 Syria • Deadly violence erupted yesterday during demonstrations by the Alawite community in Homs and coastal towns. Three people were killed and about 60 others wounded, according to the official SANA news agency. The rallies followed an attack on an Alawite mosque in Homs that left eight people dead. The authorities blame the clashes on supporters of the former regime, while the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reports that security forces opened fire. Slogans in favour of federalism were heard.

🇹🇷 Turkey • Three police officers were killed today during a raid on a suspected Islamic State hideout in Yalova, south of Istanbul. Security forces came under fire upon arrival, triggering armed clashes. Six militants, all Turkish nationals, were also killed and nine officers were injured. The authorities evacuated five women and six children from the building. The operation is part of a broad national campaign against jihadist networks, with more than 100 raids carried out on the same day in 15 provinces.

🇨🇳 China • China has revised its foreign trade law, with new provisions to protect national sovereignty, security and development interests. The text strengthens intellectual property protection and creates a trade adjustment assistance mechanism to stabilise supply chains. The authorities want to increase competitiveness and support higher-quality foreign trade amid growing international tensions. The law will come into force on 1 March 2026 and is the second major reform since 1994.
