🇨🇱 Chile • José Antonio Kast, the return of the far right to power
Yesterday, Chile elected a far-right president for the first time since the return to democracy. With around 58% of the vote, according to official results based on almost all ballots counted, José Antonio Kast won a clear victory over Jeannette Jara, a moderate communist candidate supported by a broad left-wing coalition. Thirty-five years after the end of Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship, the rise to power of this ultra-conservative marks a major political turning point for the country.
A 59-year-old lawyer, father of nine children, practising Catholic and son of a Nazi who served in the German army during the Second World War, José Antonio Kast was making his third attempt at the presidency. This time, the momentum was clearly in his favour. Although the first round had left the two finalists relatively neck and neck, the combined forces of the right and far right, representing nearly 70% of the vote, left little doubt as to the outcome of the second round.
Kast will take office in March 2026, buoyed by a platform focused on security, order and the fight against illegal immigration. Thousands of supporters celebrated the victory in the streets of Santiago and several other major cities, waving Chilean flags. In front of the headquarters of the Republican Party, founded by Kast in 2019, the president-elect promised to "restore respect for the law in all regions, without exceptions or privileges," saying that "the hope of living without fear" had triumphed. This message echoes the strong sense of insecurity expressed by part of the population, despite crime statistics that are more mixed than his campaign rhetoric suggests.
However, the victory is not without tension. Shortly after the results were announced, groups chanted the name of Augusto Pinochet and brandished portraits of the former dictator, in a country still deeply scarred by the 3,200 deaths and disappearances during the military dictatorship. In Santiago, an initial protest was dispersed by police using water cannons in Plaza Italia, the epicentre of the 2019 social uprising.
Faced with this result, Jeannette Jara acknowledged her defeat without ambiguity. The labour minister of outgoing President Gabriel Boric praised the democratic expression of the vote and said she had contacted the president-elect to wish him success, for the good of Chile. She also called on her supporters to continue their political commitment to improving living conditions in the country.
Internationally, reactions were swift. The United States welcomed the election, seeing Kast's future presidency as a partner on common priorities, including public safety, immigration and trade relations. Argentine President Javier Milei, an ally of Donald Trump, expressed his enthusiasm, calling it a victory for "ideas of freedom" over socialism in the region.
José Antonio Kast comes to power with an ultra-liberal economic agenda and a very conservative social agenda, even though he toned down some of his positions during the campaign. Opposed to abortion and same-sex marriage, and an outspoken defender of the legacy of the military dictatorship (he recently declared that "Pinochet would have voted for me"), he will now have to govern a country divided by deep social and historical rifts. IN SHORT
🇦🇺 Australia • One of the worst terrorist attacks in the country's history struck the Jewish community in Sydney during Hanukkah celebrations on Bondi Beach, leaving 15 dead and 42 wounded. Two assailants, a 50-year-old father and his 24-year-old son, opened fire before being neutralised, with the father killed at the scene. The younger man had been under investigation by intelligence services in 2019. Authorities recovered six firearms and two homemade explosive devices.
🇺🇦 Ukraine – 🇺🇸 United States • US negotiators told Ukraine during talks in Berlin today that a peace agreement with Russia would involve a withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the Donetsk region. In Ukraine, a majority of the population rejects major territorial concessions. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also said he is prepared to give up Ukraine's NATO membership bid in exchange for solid Western security guarantees. Kyiv has reaffirmed that Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity are non-negotiable, even as part of a peace agreement.
🇷🇺 Russia – 🇺🇦 Ukraine – 🇪🇺 European Union • Russia has said it is open to Ukraine joining the European Union as part of a peace agreement, according to US officials. However, Moscow remains opposed to Ukraine joining NATO, which it considers a strategic red line.
🇰🇭 Cambodia – 🇹🇭 Thailand • Cambodia accuses Thailand of bombing the province of Siem Reap for the first time since the resumption of border clashes. Phnom Penh claims that the Thai army used an F-16 fighter jet to drop two bombs near a camp for displaced civilians in the district of Srei Snam, about 70 kilometres from the border. Thailand confirms that fighting is continuing, without mentioning this area. The violence has left at least 31 people dead since it resumed, including civilians and soldiers, and has led to the evacuation of around 800,000 people on both sides of the border.
🇸🇾 Syria • A member of the Islamic State organisation who had infiltrated the Syrian General Security Forces opened fire on Saturday in Palmyra during a meeting with the international coalition, killing two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter, with three other soldiers wounded. The attacker, who had been in post for more than ten months, was shot dead and 11 Syrian agents were arrested. The attack highlights the flaws in the mass recruitment of new security forces, against a backdrop of increased cooperation between Damascus and the United States against IS, which is still active in the Badiya desert.
🇮🇱 Israel – 🇵🇸 Palestine • Israeli forces killed a 16-year-old Palestinian during a raid today in the town of Tuqu', in the occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. The teenager was shot in the chest after what local sources described as indiscriminate firing, and died in hospital. The Israeli army has not commented. The West Bank has seen a sharp increase in violence by Israeli settlers since October 2023, with numerous Palestinian deaths, including several minors.
🇪🇺 European Union • The European Union has adopted new sanctions targeting oil traders linked to the Russian maritime network, accused of helping Moscow circumvent Western restrictions on crude oil exports. The measures specifically target Murtaza Lakhani and Etibar Eyyub, who are associated with trading and transport structures using a so-called ghost fleet, operating outside Western insurance and certification circuits. The sanctions prohibit European citizens from engaging in any commercial relations with the listed individuals and entities and restrict access to transport and insurance services, while Russia continues to export significant volumes to India and China.
