🇧🇬 Bulgaria • Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov resigns under pressure from the street
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov announced today the resignation of his government, caught up in a budget crisis that sparked several weeks of massive protests. Three weeks before Bulgaria's entry into the eurozone, the executive is stepping down as a motion of no confidence was due to be debated in Parliament minutes after his televised address.
Since the end of November, the country has been rocked by unprecedented protests, led in particular by young people angered by corruption and the tax increases planned in the 2026 budget. The government had attempted to adopt the bill under an accelerated procedure. Presented as a measure to bring the country into line with the arrival of the euro on 1 January, it provided for an increase in several taxes to cover the rise in public spending. For the protesters and the opposition, these increases were merely intended to mask persistent embezzlement.
Faced with protests, the executive had already backed down on 3 December by withdrawing its initial draft, before submitting a new version this week. But the anger has not subsided. On Wednesday, tens of thousands of people gathered in Independence Square in Sofia, demanding profound change. Many denounce an economic situation that has become untenable and a political system undermined by scandals. "Corruption is everywhere," said a young protester quoted by the press, explaining that many of her friends have already left the country.
Above all, the crisis reveals the chronic instability of Bulgarian political life: seven elections in four years, fragile coalitions and governments unable to last. The Jeliazkov cabinet, approved only in January 2025 after months of negotiations, lasted less than a year. The resignation also comes amid institutional pressure: the Bulgarian president asked the Prime Minister to step down last week.
With its entry into the eurozone approaching, Bulgaria once again finds itself without a clear political direction. A new round of negotiations is beginning, as Parliament attempts to form a government capable of managing a sensitive economic transition and restoring the confidence of a population that has lost faith in its leaders. IN SHORT
🇪🇺 European Union - 🇷🇺 Russia - 🇺🇦 Ukraine • Member State ambassadors have approved a mechanism to keep the Russian central bank's €210 billion in assets held in the EU frozen indefinitely. This long-term freeze, based on Article 122 of the Treaty, is intended to secure the legal basis for a future reparations loan to Ukraine. The Commission, supported by Germany and the countries of Central Europe, is aiming for initial funding of €90 billion for 2026-2027. However, Belgium, which holds most of the assets, considers the mechanism risky and refuses to make any "reckless compromises".
🇲🇲 Myanmar • Last night, an air strike by the junta targeted the hospital in Mrauk U, in Rakhine State, killing at least 33 people and injuring 20, according to the WHO. Healthcare workers, patients and relatives are among the victims. The army is stepping up its operations ahead of the elections scheduled for late December, which are being contested by rebel groups, including the Arakan Army, which is very active in the region. The UN has denounced possible war crimes.
🇵🇸 Palestine • Khaled Meshaal, former leader of Hamas, has proposed a freeze on the movement's weapons in exchange for a lasting truce in Gaza, while rejecting the idea of total disarmament as "unacceptable". He said he was open to the deployment of an international stabilisation force along the border with Israel, without a presence inside the territory. The second phase of the US peace plan provides for an Israeli withdrawal and the gradual demilitarisation of Gaza, objectives that Tel Aviv considers non-negotiable.
🇱🇧 Lebanon - 🇮🇱 Israel • UNIFIL reported that Israeli soldiers fired on one of its patrols near Sarda in southern Lebanon on Tuesday, without causing any injuries. According to the UN mission, the Israeli military, present on Lebanese territory, had been informed of the time and route of the patrol.
🇮🇱 Israel • Amnesty International accuses Hamas of war crimes and crimes against humanity: two years after the attack on 7 October 2023, Amnesty International has published a report confirming and consolidating the findings of UN agencies and NGOs on the abuses committed by Hamas in Israel. The organisation considers that the massacres of more than 1,200 civilians and the abduction of 251 hostages constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity, including murder, sexual violence, torture and indiscriminate attacks. The report also rejects the Islamist movement's arguments aimed at minimising the direct responsibility of its fighters in the killings and abductions.
🇮🇱 Israel • Israel has reopened the Allenby border crossing with Jordan, the main crossing point for aid to Gaza. Closed since September after a Jordanian driver opened fire, killing two Israeli soldiers, it is once again welcoming humanitarian convoys. According to Israeli and Palestinian sources, nearly a hundred lorries have already passed through. All vehicles are subject to enhanced security checks and escorted to Gaza.
🇻🇪 Venezuela • UN fact-finding mission accuses National Guard of crimes against humanity: the UN's independent international mission claims that the Bolivarian National Guard (GNB) has been guilty of serious human rights violations for more than a decade. The report published today describes executions, arbitrary detentions, sexual violence and acts of torture, particularly during the crackdown on anti-government protests since 2014. Investigators denounce systematic repression of opponents and structural impunity marked by stalled investigations and evidence tampering.
🇻🇪 Venezuela • Donald Trump announced the seizure of an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela, without specifying its owner or destination. Washington intends to keep the cargo, a decision that risks heightening tensions with Caracas. Nicolás Maduro denounced the move as shameless theft and demanded an end to the United States' illegal and brutal interference.
🇳🇵 Nepal • The Nepalese government has reached an agreement with representatives of Generation Z, three months after the violent uprisings in September that led to the fall of the executive. At least 76 people were killed during two days of riots marked by the burning of the Parliament and public buildings. The agreement provides for electoral and constitutional reforms, a crackdown on corruption and a commitment to respond to the demands of the victims' families. Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki sees this as a crucial step towards better integrating the aspirations of young people into the country's governance.
🇯🇵 Japan – 🇺🇸 United States • Tokyo announced that it had conducted joint air exercises with the United States over the Sea of Japan, following Chinese and Russian patrols around the archipelago. Two American B-52 strategic bombers took part in the manoeuvres, alongside Japanese F-35 and F-15 fighter jets, in a context described as increasingly severe by the Japanese military. Washington simultaneously criticised Beijing, accusing it of locking its radars onto Japanese aircraft. The US-Japan alliance is thus presenting a coordinated response to Chinese and Russian actions deemed destabilising.
🇧🇴 Bolivia • Former President Luis Arce was arrested in La Paz in connection with an alleged corruption case linked to his time as economy minister under Evo Morales. The prosecution accuses him of authorising illegal transfers of public funds to the personal accounts of peasant leaders, causing an estimated loss of more than $51 million.
