🇪🇪 Estonia - 🇷🇺 Russia • Unprecedented airspace intrusion into Estonian airspace
Three Russian fighter jets entered Estonian airspace on Friday for approximately 12 minutes, an exceptionally long period of time. Tallinn denounced the violation as "unprecedentedly bold," while NATO dispatched its aircraft to intercept the planes. The situation was already tense after around 20 Russian drones entered Polish airspace 10 days ago.
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna pointed out that Russia had already crossed Estonia's airspace four times since the beginning of the year. But this time, the three MIG-31s extended their presence, which he said was evidence of Moscow's growing aggression. Tallinn summoned the Russian chargé d'affaires and called on its allies to increase political and economic pressure on Russia.
NATO, which is responsible for policing the skies over the Baltic countries, confirmed the interception. "This is yet another example of Russia's irresponsible behavior and the Alliance's ability to respond," said its spokesperson. Secretary General Mark Rutte had already highlighted the increase in air intrusions along the Alliance's eastern flank, also affecting Latvia, Lithuania, and Romania.
These incidents are in addition to a series of provocations. Last week, NATO launched a new air surveillance operation, Eastern Sentry, initially intended for Poland but designed to be extended to the entire region. It provides for more patrols, ground-based interception systems, and sensors. Since the annexation of Crimea in 2014, Estonia has recorded up to 40 violations of its airspace, but rarely of such duration.
The European Union, in a new package of sanctions announced this afternoon, has proposed bringing forward the ban on Russian gas imports by one year, aiming for a total exit in January 2027. The plan also includes sanctions against companies and banks in third countries accused of helping Moscow circumvent existing measures. However, all member states must still approve the plan, a task made difficult by the continued dependence of some, such as Hungary. The New York Times
IN SHORT
🇵🇰 Pakistan - 🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia • Pakistan's defense minister has stated that his country's nuclear arsenal could be made available to Saudi Arabia as part of the new defense pact between the two states. The agreement stipulates that an attack on one would be considered an attack on both. This announcement marks the first official recognition of a nuclear umbrella offered to Riyadh.
🇮🇱 Israel - 🇵🇸 Palestine • The IDF announced that it would use "unprecedented force" in Gaza City, calling on the population to flee south. Since Tuesday, the army has been conducting a large-scale ground and air offensive, which has already forced nearly 480,000 residents to flee. Today, the Gaza Civil Defense reported at least 14 more deaths in Israeli strikes. The international community has stepped up its condemnation, with the UN describing the situation as "morally, politically, and legally intolerable." Paris and London have called for an immediate end to the campaign.
🇺🇸 United States - 🇮🇱 Israel - 🇺🇳 UN • Washington yesterday vetoed a new Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian access to Gaza. The text, supported by 14 members, also demanded the release of hostages. This obstruction sparked outrage, with Algeria and Pakistan denouncing the Council's impotence in the face of the humanitarian tragedy. The United States justified its position by criticizing the lack of condemnation of Hamas, while Israel hailed the veto as an act of diplomatic firmness.
🇸🇩 Sudan • A drone attack by the Rapid Support Forces killed at least 75 people in a mosque in the Abu Shouk camp for displaced persons near El Fasher in Darfur. The city, the army's last stronghold in the region, has been under siege for 18 months. Paramilitaries are continuing their offensive to seize this strategic center, raising fears of massacres against certain communities, including the Zaghawa. Humanitarian aid is virtually non-existent, even though El Fasher is home to 260,000 civilians, half of whom are children.
🇺🇳 UN - 🇮🇷 Iran • The Security Council has approved the reinstatement of sanctions against Iran, at the initiative of Paris, London, and Berlin, which are demanding stronger guarantees on its nuclear program. The "snapback" mechanism will reactivate the sanctions in force before 2015 on September 28, unless otherwise decided. The Europeans are maintaining an offer to negotiate, but Tehran denounces an "escalation" and claims to have submitted an alternative proposal to avoid this return to sanctions.
🇫🇷 France - 🇲🇱 Mali • Paris has declared two Malian diplomats stationed in France "persona non grata" and given them until September 20 to leave the country. These intelligence agents are being targeted in retaliation for the arrest in Bamako of a French diplomat accused of espionage by the junta. France has also suspended its counterterrorism cooperation with Mali, ending the exchange of crucial intelligence on armed groups. Bamako responded by ordering the departure of several French diplomats, whom Paris already considers to be off duty. RFI
🇫🇷 France - 🇵🇸 Palestine • 43 years after the attack on Rue des Rosiers in Paris, which left six people dead and 22 wounded in 1982, Palestinian authorities have arrested 70-year-old Hicham Harb, suspected of having supervised the commando unit. The subject of an international arrest warrant for 10 years, he is one of six men referred to the Special Assize Court in Paris. Emmanuel Macron hailed this as a "major breakthrough" and called for his swift extradition.
