🇲🇩 Moldova • Maia Sandu's pro-European party retains absolute majority

The Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), President Maia Sandu's pro-European party, won an absolute majority in yesterday's parliamentary elections. With more than 50% of the vote and 55 seats out of 101, the PAS has confirmed its hold on power, despite a context of high political and economic tensions. The pro-Russian opposition, grouped together in the Patriotic Bloc, won only 24.2% of the vote and is already denouncing possible fraud, calling for demonstrations in Chisinau.

This victory can be explained in part by the massive support of the diaspora: more than 280,000 voters living abroad took part in the election, 78% of whom voted for the PAS. This is a historic record for Moldova, which is divided between the interior of the country, which is more sensitive to pro-Russian rhetoric, and its emigrant communities, which are largely in favor of European integration. National turnout reached 52%, higher than in the last legislative elections.

The election was marked by accusations of Russian interference. Chisinau accuses Moscow of having injected hundreds of millions of euros into disinformation campaigns and vote buying. The authorities had banned two parties suspected of illegal financing linked to Russia, triggering the ire of the opposition, which describes these measures as authoritarian excesses. At the same time, several cyberattacks and bomb threats targeted the country and its polling stations abroad, without disrupting the vote count.

The issue of Transnistria also reignited tensions. In this pro-Russian separatist region, around 12,000 voters were able to cast their ballots, compared to 28,000 in 2021, due to a reduction in the number of polling stations. Although half of those who voted chose the Patriotic Bloc, the PAS still won 30% of the vote, an unprecedented result in this pro-Russian stronghold.

For Maia Sandu, the victory paves the way for further reforms and closer ties with the European Union (Moldova has been a candidate for accession since 2022). But economic difficulties, exacerbated by rising energy costs since the reduction in Russian gas imports, remain a major challenge for her government. The opposition, led by former president Igor Dodon, is already promising to mobilize the streets to challenge the legitimacy of the election. Le Monde

IN SHORT

🇵🇸 Palestine • Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair is reportedly willing to lead a provisional government in Gaza following a potential peace deal, according to multiple media outlets. His name is being considered to oversee an interim authority before power is transferred to the Palestinian Authority. Backed by allies of Donald Trump, Blair is already working on a Gaza development plan through his consulting firm. Palestinians, including Mustafa Barghouti, oppose the idea, citing his controversial legacy tied to the Iraq War.

🇺🇸 United States - 🇮🇱 Israel - 🇵🇸 Palestine • Donald Trump unveiled a 21-point peace plan to end the Gaza war, featuring a permanent ceasefire, the release of Israeli hostages within 48 hours, and a phased Israeli military withdrawal. Hamas would be excluded from governance, replaced by a transitional Palestinian and international authority overseen by the U.S. The plan also outlines Gaza’s reconstruction and a potential path to a Palestinian state, though no timeline is set. Netanyahu is cautiously engaging with Trump’s team, but Israel’s far-right rejects any truce without a "total victory" over Hamas.

🇪🇺 European Union • Biodiversity in Europe continues to decline, with over 80% of protected habitats in poor condition and 60-70% of soils and water bodies affected, according to the latest report by the European Environment Agency. Despite a 37% drop in greenhouse gas emissions since 1990 and improved air quality, pollution still accounts for at least 10% of premature deaths. The European lifestyle, driven by overconsumption and a weakly circular economy (11.8% in 2023), is under scrutiny. Three-quarters of eurozone businesses depend on ecosystems, highlighting the urgency to act and prevent growing economic losses.

🇷🇸 Serbia - 🇫🇷 France - 🇩🇪 Germany • Eleven individuals were arrested in Serbia for allegedly fueling hatred against Muslims and Jews in France and Germany. They are suspected of placing pig heads outside Parisian mosques in early September, as well as vandalizing synagogues and a Jewish restaurant with green paint. Serbian authorities suggest these actions, carried out between April and September 2025, were coordinated by a foreign intelligence service, hinting at potential interference. Two suspects linked to the incidents reportedly used a Serbian-registered vehicle and a Croatian phone line.

🇷🇺 Russia • The Russian submarine Novorossiisk, spotted near Gibraltar, has raised concerns after opposition Telegram channel Tchéka-OGPU reported fuel leaks and explosion risks. However, sources like Mer et Marine downplay the alarm, stating no distress signals were detected, with the submarine operating independently and submerging voluntarily on Sunday. Part of Russia’s expanded Atlantic deployments since losing its Syrian base in Tartous and the Ukraine war, this nuclear-capable submarine reflects Moscow’s strategic signaling in European waters.

🇬🇦 Gabon • President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema’s party, the Democratic Builders’ Union (UDB), leads in partial legislative results, surpassing the former ruling PDG, now pushed to a runoff. Founded just three months ago, the UDB solidifies its breakthrough, while fraud allegations—mass proxy voting and voter transport—fuel significant electoral disputes. Opposition figures and former PDG allies criticize the "chaotic" vote, decrying a return to past practices despite the 2023 coup-led transition.
